Neuropsychological Consultation, Testing & Treatment

Neuropsychological assessment is often an integral part of diagnosing and treating the cognitive (mental) and behavioral effects of a concussion, brain injury or other neurological condition which may alter or compromise brain functioning.  Common causes of such disturbances may include dementia, stroke, ADD/ADHD, depression/anxiety, metabolic disorders (thyroid imbalance, diabetes, hypoglycemia), substance/alcohol abuse and exposure to toxic substances.

Neuropsychological testing involves assessment of a variety of cognitive skills including memory, attention and concentration, visual perception, problem solving and motor skills.  These test usually involve paper and pencil and computerized tests which are administered by a specially trained technician.

In addition, the neuropsychological evaluation also typically includes psychological testing which is utilized to asses behavioral personality and mood related symptoms and coping ability.  These test typically involve completing a comprehensive inventory-checklist of symptoms.

Upon completion of the neuropsychological evaluation, results are provided by a clinical neuropsychologist who makes recommendations regarding diagnosis, relevant treatment interventions and any other required referrals.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is the electronic process of measuring and monitoring how the body reacts to stress, tension and pain.  As an example many pain symptoms are accompanied by muscle contractions and tightness.  Biofeedback displays these contractions on a computer screen so we can see the early warning signs of pain.  Biofeedback teaches you to control and reduce your tension thus reducing your pain.  Biofeedback also deeply relaxes you and therefore helps with stress, anxiety and insomnia.  You can practice various specialized techniques to reduce these stress responses in our bodies and minds on a day to day basis.  Biofeedback is used to treat:

Chronic Pain

Panic Attacks

Migraine And Tension Headaches

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

ADD/ADHD

Stress And Anxiety

Heart Disease/Hypertension

The goals of biofeedback training are:

To reduce symptoms due to illness, injury, disease or stress related disorders.

To improve your response to stress.

To improve your overall level of function.

To improve the quality of your life.

Please give our office a call for additional information about biofeedback or to speak with our biofeedback specialist at 732-840-5266.
